Summary notes from a February 2006 interview with Isao "Ike" Kato, known inside Toyota as the father of the standardized work and kaizen courses and a master instructor of TWI material. Kato recounts TWI's introduction at Toyota (Job Instruction December 1951, Job Methods June 1952, Job Relations March 1953), explains why Ohno replaced JM with Shingo's P-course, traces the development of the standardized work and kaizen courses, and argues JI had the biggest impact on TPS while rejecting the claim that TWI is the overall root of lean.
