TWI Job Instruction — Original Course Materials and Forms

The TWI Job Instruction (JI) program teaches supervisors how to teach an employee to do a particular job safely, correctly, and conscientiously. The method on the card has four steps: prepare the learner, present the operation, try out performance, and follow up. The card closes with the JI motto: if the employee has not learned, the instructor has not taught.

Each session file is a complete instructor’s guide. It spells out what to say, what to write, the materials to prepare, and the room setup (seats in a horseshoe, flip chart, the “If the employee hasn’t learned” chart).

The five sessions:

• Session 1 opens the program and runs the initial teaching demonstration using short electrical cords (the Fire Underwriter’s Knot job).
• Session 2 brings in the job breakdown sheet, and the first prepared volunteers begin practice instruction demonstrations.
• Session 3 adds the planning timetable sheet and continues the practice demonstrations.
• Session 4 continues practice with observation checksheets and special tools for demonstration.
• Session 5 completes the practice demonstrations and closes the program.

The card and forms: the JI pocket card carries the four steps plus the pre-instruction check (is the job breakdown complete, is the work area prepared). The job breakdown sheet records the important steps, key points, and reasons for a task, along with parts, tools, and safety equipment. The observation check sheet is a yes/no checklist for critiquing each of the four steps during practice instruction. The team training matrix plans and tracks which team members are trained on which processes over the year. The participant handout accompanies Session 1 and includes a short history of TWI and its reported wartime results.
