Does Toyota Use TPM or Measure OEE?
Short answer: No. Toyota has never had a TPM program inside Toyota Motor Company in Japan, and OEE is not a metric Toyota uses. However, in machine-intensive environments Toyota built up many of the same elements independently — high uptime, operator daily maintenance, and a Jidoka mindset toward equipment reliability.
The Short Version
Toyota has many types of shops — assembly, machining, casting, forging, stamping, body weld, paint, plastics, and heat treat. Across all of them, there has never been an official TPM program and no usage of OEE as a metric. Some individual managers in machine-intensive shops have taken an interest in TPM concepts, but they are the exception rather than the norm.
TPM’s Influence Nearby
While Toyota did not embrace TPM, its largest supplier — Nippon Denso — did. Denso adopted TPM for many decades, won TPM awards from the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM), made it a central part of their operating system, and exported it overseas to many of their facilities.
JIPM, founded by Seiichi Nakajima, had broad influence across Japanese industry. But that influence never became a specific program inside Toyota.
Why Toyota Didn’t Need It — and What It Did Instead
The JIT and assembly-focused version of TPS was always prominent inside Toyota. The supplying component shops — engine, transmission, and chassis as prime examples — were simply expected to supply on demand. This required high levels of uptime, quality, and reliability.
So while Toyota did not have TPM-type programs, it built up many of the same elements on its own over time. You can see it in the high levels of uptime in machine-intensive environments, the Jidoka mindset toward equipment, and the emphasis on operator daily maintenance.
Toyota to this day has a specific emphasis called 3 Pillar Activity, and a central part of it is machine cleaning and daily maintenance of critical surfaces. Toyota never had an official TPM program by name, but ended up duplicating many of the critical elements through its own system.
